Pulling the rear hub on old B ??

I need to pull off the rear wheel hub on one side of my "B". I have looked over the details in the IT manual showing the puller attached for removal. The drawing shows a straight shaft but the spline look like they have taper to them. Are the hubs generally hard to pull? The holes for pulling are for 7/8" bolts (like on a big highway size grader). I need to build a puller to do this. From those of you who have done this job I'm interested in knowing how stuck in place these hubs generally are? Thanks!

When I took mine off, I loosened the nut so it was still on by about 5 turns and the whacked the hub a couple times with a sledge hammer from the front and then the back and they came right off.

I would be careful about hitting too hard, there are bearings in there and you don't want to put dents in them. I would make up a puller as you were thinking and then if the hub didn't come off maybe some careful taps to the center bolt of the puller.

I have beat a bunch off with a sledge rotating the wheel a quarter turn between whacks. With a puller the ones I did needed whacked with a sledge on the outer edge from behind. They are tapered.

I got it off now, it did need the puller and along with a few taps with a moderate size hammer it let go. One of the bearings isn't happy from "the sounds and how it feels" when turning the wheel while jacked up...the project continues next week. Thanks again for everyone's input.

The easiest way to get at those bearings.

It doesn't take that large of a press but you will have fits pushing the axle out of the inside bearing without removing the final drive. You can block and chain a bottle jack under the final drive instead though. I tried to do a couple of them by beating them out. The center bolt got damaged each time. I also felt like I was wearing out a heavy hammer along with my arm. :)^D

I found I could remove the final drive and get at the break bands easy at the same time. It means a few extra bolts to remove but the task is one I didn't have to crawl around on the ground or floor trying to see what I was doing. I do have a few more tools than the average old tractor lover.
