I have a 1953 AC WD converted to 12 V. Recently, I have had problems starting the WD. Eventually, after bench testing the starter, using a new battery, and replacing the starter feed cable, I was able to get the tractor started only after I replaced the grounding strap and added an additional direct ground wire to the starter case. Later, when the additional direct ground wire attachment bolt loosened, the tractor arced there when attempting starting and did not reliably start until I tightened the additional ground wire. How can it be that a woven grounding strap can go bad and the replacement woven grounding strap was not sufficient to ensure a start? Has anyone had starting problems from a bad grounding strap?
