What would cause the starter to lock up on my WD? Locked up so tight the other day that I could not turn engine over with the hand crank, replaced the starter last year because of this issue. Even replaced fly wheel and installed a new starter ring gear.

Pretty common problem, and if you have it set up on 12 volts even more common. On 12 volts you need to use the smaller auto type battery cable to help lessen the blow if the 12 volts on a 6 volt starter or get a 12 volt starter if you can find one. I have seen this problem on almost every brand of tractor so not out of the ordinary

just did that to my wd yesterday, pull your starter off, [ undo all the electrical, then the set bolt on the left side and wiggle it out], expect to find a blown up starter drive if your lucky, if you have my luck, you'll also have a broken nose on the starter too, be sure to get all the little pieces out of the flywheel
