Allis 180 PTO Dr Allis

Hi. 180 hyd PTO swapped valves from my other 180 to this one and it still had same problem put PTO valve down to shut off PTO. Sounds like engine is dragging and then rev it up a little and handle pops back to neutral in the PTO .detent is lock in good too. I know PTO works ,power director works sometimes that pops back to neutral too. Not sure what to do.kinds new to these. Thank you sir. Steve.

Steve I feel your pain as I have a 185 with the same issue. I too posted the same question and our Doc told me to get a gauge and see what pressures were in the hi-Lo and pto valves which are under the shield below the instrument panel. In my case the pressures were ( can't remember the numbers for psi) running high so when I went to reduce the shims under the spring in the valve I found someone had put a thick nut under the spring which boosted the pressure way too much. I did away with the nut and shimmed with washers to the correct pressures and put all back together. But...now hi range will slip! So reducing the pressures helped in reducing the noises inside and reduced the times the pto would fly out of the off detention and engauge whenever I pulled the pd from hi to Lo but now as I said hi range will slip under load. Help us Doc!!!

I have had a handful of 180/185's that have had sticking pressure regulator spool problems. The pressure regulator for the PTO and the Power Director clutch is in the Power Director clutch valve itself. If the regulator is sticking or stuck it will cause pressures to be higher than spec and the levers may not want to stay in detent. There is a chance that the levers detent mechanism is worn out. There were two designs of detents. The pressure regulator spool is in the bottom of the P.D. valve under a hex cap that is NOT in line with the Hi-Low spool. You can cut the lower right corner of the cowl free so you can have easier access to this pressure regulator by removing only one bolt instead of the whole cowl. Pressure is read at the manifold where the brake lock is attached to. One plug for high and the other for low. Memory tells me the spec is less than 300 psi with the engine wide open. If you have good pressure in high and it slips, there must be broken discs inside the clutch. Pressure in low and high should be within 10 psi of being the same. Pressure regulator spool has a slug in the end opposite the spring...DO NOT LOSE IT and make sure it is free.

Doc thank you so much I can't wait to see what's up with that press reg. I almost wish I didn't
have to fly for the next week! I will surely report back asap. Thanks again and here's hoping our friend Steve
can also benefit from such wisdom we are blessed with from our Dr Allis.

Thank you Dr Allis. They had to many shims
in that valve and solved the problems. I
redid the PTO unit. When I got the tractor
the PTO was out of it with a broken drum. I
redid all that and I had problems like I
said all better now thanks.
