B or CA mower questions

I've got what I believe is a #5 mower for my B. I had it on years ago and had to make it fit the tractor. Did by adjusting the front mounts as this mower mounts differently on the CA than the B. It's made to work on all three B, C and CA tractors. My question is I haven't mounted it on the tractor in about 5 years so I can't remember exactly how it mounted. I do know we had a bunch of washer under the hitch mounts to level it. Can't remember if there were turnbuckles or not. If not do I need them? What are they there for other than to assist in carrying the weight? I can't seem to locate them with all the other things leading me to believe I never had them in the beginning. If they are needed what today can I make them from that would work. The turnbuckles I see online are not the same. Any ideas? Also I have misplaced the belt pulley for the pto. I know I had one. Can I make one from a pulley from the tractor store and weld on a pto mount? Anyone done that? Is there a better way? One already made? Thanks guys for your help.

I do not know what # it is but I have a belly mount sickle bar mower on a C. I used all thread as a way to adjust the belt on it at the draw bar. Has 2 pieces of all thread one on each side with nuts so I can adjust just how tight the belt stays. All thread is about 1 inch stuff

a #5 is a sickle belly mower for a CA ? I don't understand the turn buckle questions.. The unit slides under the tractor and two straps go up to the flywheel housings to hold up the front........ the back bars set on the C shape drawbar and you add washers between the drawbar and the mower frame to adjust up and down and tighten the belt on the pulley........... and yes, you can make a pulley unit from parts from the Farm Store. Just get the diameters about right so the mower speed matches tractor RPM.

Thanks Steve for your reply, Yes the #5 mower was for the B, C, and CA it was different in some ways but they were all basically the same. I did find a parts list on the net and confirmed the mower.

As to the turnbuckles there would be two mounted on the back side of the tractor mounted from the hitch to the seat frame. My guess was they were to adjust or possibly hold up the hitch when the mower was mounted. They had a nut midway that you could adjust. Just wondering if they were needed and if so what for.

Now as to the pulley, I am not understanding matching the tractors rpm and pulley diameter. It would sound like I need to get a bunch made to figure out what one works. Don't have that time nor money was thinking it was just say a 10" pulley or something like that. The parts diagram only gave the description as pulley.

That pulley if you have the correct one was set up with shims. One could make it bigger or smaller by adding or removing shims. If I remember right I have a 10 inch pulley on the PTO of a C and it seem to spin and work the sickle bar a bit to fast. I buy the PTO blanks and weld on pulleys and make my own. Cost me less then $2o to make them. I started wit ha 12 inch pulley and that was to fast so went to the 10 and it too seem a bit to fast.

OK Ed, I understand the turnbuckles now... they are part of the tractor, not the mower.. You can use a solid link or allthread if you wish.. That was to position the drawbar, not the mower.............. The mower arms bolt to the drawbar with extra washers between the two.. You can add or take out washers to tighten the belt or adjust the mower frame up and down..... and the pulley was adjustable... if you use a FIXED pulled, then you need the washers between the frames to tighten the belt, and maybe the alltread up to the seat frame could also be used... get the belt " close" to the right size so minimal adjustment is needed... I didn't measure the OD of my pulley, and I was not talking about building several... just saying that if it is too BIG, then you might be running the sickle too fast with the PTO turning a given speed.. I don't run full throttle, normally about 1200 RMP motor speed... faster than that and sickle seems to be moving too fast. If someone else don't say the pulley sizes, I can measure mine.
