Case 530 Question

Question: I have a Case 530 I believe it"s a 1966. Question I have is I"m loosing Hydraulic Oil from the hydraulic resesvor into the rear end. It"s not a fast leak but checking the hydraulic on the dipstick it"s down about a quart or less in a months time depending how much I run the tractor. Anyways the rear end checks over full bye a 1/2 inch on the stick. Enough where the oil seal on the RH side brake leaking.
I"m guessing on this but is it possible the (3 pt piston) under the seat possibly leaking oil into the rear end? Or is there another proviable place it could be coming from?
I never had the top off the 3 pt unit, but is this something i might be getting into that way----over my head so to speak? Is the a way it can be checked before tearing into it?
Thanks! Mike

the seal between the 3 speed tranny and 4 speed is out, common problem not an expensive fix just labor, note the hyd resovore is the 3 speed box

There are 2 possibilities.....it is either the 3 pt cylinder or the seal on the PTO shaft where it passes through the housing wall between the transmission housing and the rear end.. You can determine which it is by hanging something hefty(like a plow, snowblower etc) on the 3 pt overnight. If it has settled down by morning, it is the piston seals. If not it the PTO seal. The lid of the the rear end will have to be removed to repair either. Both repairs are pretty straight forward and you can likely handle either.

Hey Mike

If the the 3-point hitch won't stay up under a load they you will need to replace the seals

1. Remove the seat by removing four 3/8" bolts at it's base.
2. Remove the 3-point hitch arms by removing the 3/8" bolts and caps from each end of the rockshaft.
3. Disconnect the hydraulic levers from the transmission top plate by backing out the Rod/bolt the levers pivot on.
4. Disconnect the hydraulic line that is plumbed into the left side of the transmission top plate.
5. Remove the eleven 3/8" bolts holding the transmission top plate / rockshaft housing in place.
6. Lift the top plate off of the tractor, and slide the rock shaft out of the housing , which will allow the connecting rod and piston to be removed.
7. Replace the seal and scraper and re-assemble

The entire job should take less than an hour if you have the right parts ahead of time. The scraper/wear ring (item number 7 below) is part number A36441 and is available from Case for about $23. The seal (item number 6 below) is part number A36442 and is available from Case for about $45. Good luck - Joe

Thanks,
Tom,Joe,Bruce,Bradley for your help! I have noticed the 3 pt raises upward at times as soon as I start up the tractor with just a 3 pt boom on the back.
I guess I"ll get my feet wet and try removing the 3 pt assm off.
If it"s in betwween the transmission cases like tom said I will do that also.
Not sure what the assembly under the seat weighs I think my neighbor has a cherry picker I can use.
Thanks again! Mike

Joe, to you mean when the engine is turned off and the load on the 3pt sinks? Does that indicate bad seals? I changed the pto shaft seal and bearing a few years ago and it leaks really badly. Could it be the rearend is overfilled with hydraulic fluid forcing the extra fluid thru the pto seal? Thanks, Jacques
