511b , wont run

so far all i have done is installed new points ,.. i have 2 starters and neither one will crank
enuf to start , let alone check for spark,. we pulled it and it seems to be blowing out smoke
and firing but it will not keep running.. gonna run the starter to a shop on monday ,. hopefully
they can make 2 into one ,. any ideas are welcome,. kinda thinking of taking a pto off the little
yanmar and crankin it over,. but i not sure if it would crank in correct direction ??? . i started
having trouble with this 500 a couple yrs ago and it has been setting waiting for me to get a
roundto it ,,.don livingston gave me a round tuit,so it was time to get the 500 going again ..

Well, first things first, get it cranking. Did you try a new battery? Solenoid? Cables? I see problems with corroded terminals more often than anything else. Check cranking voltage at the starter? What do the spark plugs look like? If you need manual pages let me know, I believe the one I have for my 611B covers it.

thanks keith ,.i do have a book ,. i guess i am lookin for empathy ,LOL i really thought once i put the points in
it it would fire to life,.the battery is hot , and the starter gets hot crankin , and it was problematic for years,
my silly dyslexic mind , wont allow me to easily picture if a PTO hooked back to back would spin correctly to
check spark , but i think it is correct ..

I did run into an issue a few years ago with a Massey Harris Pacer that seemed to have similar symptoms. The ignition timing was too far advanced and it would barely crank over and seem like it was trying to start. Good luck, Sam

(quoted from post at 06:30:28 09/17/17) PTO will be turning wrong way. If you have a two tractors with belt pulleys you can twist the belt.
Yeah but it would still check the spark, just nothing else. I wouldn't do it long, because of oil flow, and I'd have all the plugs out. But sooner or later you'll want to fix the starting system anyway, why not now?

A classic cause of a starter getting hot is too small of a cable. Both the Battery Cables & Switch to Starter cable should be at least 1 Gauge.

Right, that's why I recommended a voltage test [u:8b5e7e26d9]at the starter[/u:8b5e7e26d9].
