I have a Case IH 585 that broke the hydraulic fitting in the steering cylinder shaft end when turning left. I replaced the fitting and it would barely turn left at all and broke the fitting again when it bottomed out. I replaced it again and will will not turn left at all. It turns full right good but wont turn back left. When you turn the steering wheel left the steering cylinder shaft extends and will break the fitting if you turn it too far, but the wheels don't turn left.

Anybody know whats going on?

Have you tried asking your question on the IH board? This tractor is a Doncaster, English built IH, and not a real Case tractor. Might find more answers from IH guys than Case guys.

Is it a 2 wheel drive? Are both ends of the cylinder rod sticking out the same amount? This would be when the front wheels are straight.

It is 2 wheel drive and yes both sides are sticking out and it is turned full right. I'm sure this is not normal. I thought I might loosen the fitting so fluid could escape and manually force the cylinder back all the way. (left side) I also wondered if air could be trapped in one side of the cylinder and how to bleed it off.

The piston which is pressed onto the cylinder rod has moved. The cylinder will have to be taken apart. Then you will have to press the piston back to center on the rod. This will have to be done in a hydraulic press. Good luck! Sometimes a new rod is required.

Thanks Scott, I'll pull it off and see what I can do. I think I will post on the IH board as Bruce from Can. suggested too.
Appreciate all your input.
