5130 dieing

Ok so I posted about this a while back. I have a 5130 that will die on me after using it for an hour or 2. It happens whether it's cold or not. Seems like it does it more when the tank gets below 3/4 - 1/2. So I finally got time to tear into it. I pulled the seat out to get to the fuel lines. I pulled them off the 2 tubes coming out of the top of the tank. I then turned that piece and pulled the whole thing out of the tank. The tubes are metal from top to bottom so that throws out my thoughts of the tubes being brittle and not able to pick up fuel when it gets to a half a tank. The next thoughts I have are replacing the 2 fuel lines going from the tank to the block. Have a new priming pump but have not put it on yet because I can't imagine that is the issue. I'm grasping at straws here trying to figure this out without using the shotgun approach and replacing things that don't really need replaced.

Second question is on the heater cock shutoff. On the right side of the tractor is the shutoff. Which direction should it be turned for the coolant to not flow to the heater?

All thoughts and insight is greatly appreciated. I'm a beginning farmer and this is my only tractor that I use for everything. Thank you all.

This really sounds fuel related, and about all I would do to start with is eliminate any and all possible things that could restrict fuel flow. Start at the tank, clean it out, and blow out fuel lines, and change filters. Make sure return line is clear as well. These steps wouldn?t cost many dollars, and when you put fuel back into the tank use only fresh fuel, not the fuel you removed. There is often chat about alge growing in diesel tanks, so eliminate any chance of contaminated fuel that could plug screens and filters. As you have said it runs fine for a while, then starves for fuel.

Both of the fuel lines are probably coming apart inside. Those are the 2 that run from the tank to the lift pump. The fuel tank and tire will have to be removed to change those lines. The rubber portion is probably where your problem is. When the heater valve handle is in line it is on and when its across its off.

So what?s the easiest way to test them to make sure that?s the issue? I?ve contemplated just replacing those lines but at the cost of $400 I?d like to know that is the issue.

I was thinking I would drain the fuel tank today and make sure there isn?t something that could potentially be blocking the pickup line in the tank causing it to starve for fuel. However last summer when this was happening I noticed there was some fuel that appeared to be leaking out of the top where the lines come out of the tank or the hoses connect I could t really tell just could see there was something wet around it.

Thanks for your help and info this far.

I am going to start with cleaning the tank today/tonight. See if there is anything that could be blocking my pickup line. There is no screen or filter on the inside of the tank or in the fuel lines themselves. Will blow some air through the lines to make sure they are clear as well while I have it all apart.

Thanks for your input.

Yes, I was told this first by my dealer when I went to buy the lines new,, these on the ones I changed had real tiny almost too small to see pin holes in it and it sucked air but did not leak externally,, all of them was the same was and all on the 5100 series I also added a inline filter right before the transfer pump, I did a test before doing the first one to confirm the lines were indeed sucking air by using a electric pump and clear line it was leaking so bad you could not see much of the fuel for the air bubbles

Did you route them the factory way down beside the tank? 3/8 hose would be huge price reduction and I would probably just got ahead and replace them anyways just because.

Thanks!

Iowa guy,I have 5250 got to giving me a fit few years ago. I put a pressure gauge in the discharge side, fuel pressure acting crazy high then zero back up again. Replaced lift pump problem solved.
Wanted to know what was wrong with pump. Cut it open and there is a tiny plastic fuel filter made in the inlet about the size of your pinky last knuckle to end of nail. Can't see it till you tear the pump apart. Had I known it was there, probably would have had a red hot wire poked thru it. Think I could have bent something to reach it.

I did kind of the same thing with my 5140. It would loose prime if it sat for a few days. Service manager at the dealership told me to cut the lines off about two inches out from the tank, and put in a section of rubber with hose clamps. Did it and worked fine.

Drain the fuel tank and remove the tank then replace the two lines I have done lot of them CaseIH sould have them in stock

Another question... can someone tell me which port is the low pressure port on the AC system? Wanting to check to see if it?s low or not. The ac is fairly cool but want to see if it needs any added to make it colder.

Thanks.

The line going from the compressor to the condenser will be the high pressure side of the system. The low pressure connection should be on the other line going to the compressor.

Quick update. I drained my fuel tank. Nothing to speak of blocking the uptake tube. No filter on the end of the tube. I went ahead and replaced the fuel lines with 3/8 rubber fuel lines. Put on a new lift pump. I did put an inline filter just before the lift pump. So here we go. I put about 8-10galnof fuel in, pumped the lift pump, and started the tractor. It fired right up stumbled and then smoothed out. All while I?m watching the in-line fuel filter I put in. It was completely full of fuel when I started it. It continued to be full for 30-45 seconds and then all the sudden the fuel started to leave the filter and air bubbles come rushing in. The tractor started to stumble and then died. I tried to pump the the lift pump again but inline fuel filter wouldn?t ever keep primer full of fuel it kept wanting to leak back. At this point the only thing I have not changed is the sending unit. One of the tubes going into the tank could be cracked possibly? I?ve had a couple case mechanics tell me to check this and thought it might be the culprit from the get go. Anyone else have issues with the sending unit?

Thanks

That would be where I would look next,, I have not seen one have a issue there but it sure could be it or you have something floating in the tank and blocking off the suction line

Another updates.... replaced the sender unit this afternoon and she is purring like a kitten. Not stumbles no air coming into the fuel screen I installed before the lift pump. All seems to be right again thank the lord.

Noticed my radiator is leaking so will be installing a different one tomorrow. Then let the baling begin!

Thanks for all the input it is greatly appreciated!
