I recently purchased a 1948 Case VAC. When I picked up the tractor the man I bought it from claimed it had been converted to 12v. The battery had also been connected negative ground, which I know these tractors were originally positive ground. What threw me off is the tractor has a generator not an alternator. And when jumped off it ran like a top. The 12v. Battery that was in the tractor is shot and needs to be replaced. So my concern is how do I know for sure the tractor has been converted from 6v to 12v so I know what kind of battery to buy?

A generator can be 12V, polarity can be either, if it is working I would replace and connect in kind.

You need to determine that the generator is in fact 12V. Usually there is a tag riveted to the generator that tells the voltage, 6V or 12V. I have seen many times where a 12v battery was installed & the 6v gen left in place to burn up.

If it is 12V, when running it should put about 13.5 to 14V across the battery. If you measure it and it reads 12V or less, then you are reading battery voltage and not the generator because the generator is 6 volts.
