Case VAC Brakes

My VAC started leaking oil into the brakes. It has single disc brakes. I have the left side off currently, and will do the right side after the left side is done. When putting the bearing carrier back on, should there be any kind of sealant between it and the casting? There were 7 shims on it and when I put it back on I'll check the shaft endplay and remove shims if needed.

I soaked the brake disc in gasoline for about three days and it is now drying out. Any other suggestions for getting the oil out of them? There appears to be about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch of pad above the rivets, how does that compare to new pads?

The serial number is 5550713. How do I find out what year it is and whether it is a VAC or a VAC-13?

What I have done to get grease out of breaks disc is soak them in gas and set them on fire. The heat will boil the grease out and burn it off. Rough them up with sandpaper before you put them back on. Make sure you set them in a safe place while burning. Like a gravel driveway.

Did you replace the grease seals? All this will be a waste of time if your didn't. The shims are all you need behind the bearing carrier. Checking end play is a good idea.

Your VAC is a 1951 model. First two numbers minuus four gives you the year.

A VAC 12 is narrow front, a VAC 13 is wide front. The VAC 14 is the next style newer and sits lower. The operator straddles the transmission. I believe a VAC 11 is single front wheel. I find it interesting that you have an older serial number but disc brakes. Mine is a newer SN but has band brakes. (5572624). Either mine got some old leftover parts at the factory or an older rear end was was put on at some point.

Mine is a wide adjustable front. Most pictures of VACs that I see with wide front the axle doesn't appear to be adjustable and sits under the front of the tractor. Mine kind of sits out in front of the tractor. Mine has the engine mounted hydraulic pump and therefore has live hydraulics. It had the eagle hitch, but I replaced/partially manufactured a three point hitch for it. I added a dual valve and now have remote hydraulics on it. One in the front for my snowplow and one in the back.

I think it is a VAC-13, but I'm not positive. I would not say that mine sits lower.

Ben,

I had a 1947 VAC and it had disc brakes. I never knew VAC'S had band brakes. A search through a parts book might shed some light on the subject.

The manual I have describes some with band brakes, some with single disc brakes and some with double disc brakes.

Looking at the manual it looks like they started with disk and switched to band later on. I would have thought it was the other way around.

I wonder why they switched? The only experience I have had with any Case tractor brakes were greasy disc brakes. I'd think a better seal in the carrier would have been a good remedy for that.

They went away from the discs with tractor 5555000, so it looks like yours is one of the later ones to still have them

Vac 13 will have round tube frount axle, and will not have steering geer housing under battery nor drag link but would have a worm shaft that goes through dash not under it and a 13 will have slightly different tin work with longer grill. The number series did not come along till sometime in 1951 for 52 model year.your serial is not far from the change over at no.557000 by part book.
