970- swapped 540 to 1000, back to 540, now 540 doesn't work.

I switched the pto shaft to run 1000rpm the other day. It was the first time I had done it on this tractor and with how hard it was to remove the shaft I'm wondering if no one else had ever removed it in the last 40 years. In order to get it out I attached a 540 yoke, put tension on it with my ATV winch and tapped on it with a hammer. Doing that it very slowly started to come out until it finally popped out. I cleaned everything up and not it slides in and out nice and smooth.

So today I switch it back to 540 and now you can just spin the shaft by hand, like it's in neutral. It seems to be related to the spring loaded mechanism that locks the 1000rpm in place. When I spin it around the other way so 1000rpm is the active end, it locks up and you can no longer spin it by hand. So I'll do that, then put it back to 540 and initially it's locked in place but as soon as I start the tractor it goes into "neutral" again.

So in shorter summary, 540 used to work, switched to 1000 the other day, now 540 no longer works. 1000 still works fine.

Also may or may not be related. I bought this tractor earlier this summer and it's one of the 70 series tractors that the PTO spins continuously until you put a load on it. And now with this new development, in 540 mode it will still spin continuously but you can grab and stop it with your hand. I do plan to take the rear apart this winter and replace the pto brake and clutch.

Everything is a bit tight yet and the spring is not strong enough to shift it back into the 540 position. With the PTO shaft removed I use a large snapring pliers that
opens up when squeezing the handles. Insert into the tube of the PTO and squeeze tightly on the handles, this will then grip the inside of the tube allowing you to pull
the tube reward doing the shifting that the spring could not do. After making sure it is fully rearward reinstall shaft and you are good to go. Rod.
