Vac brake trouble

I have replaced the seals in my 49 vac brake housing 3 times in the past 2 years and I still continue to get oil in my brake housing from the rear end. I don?t feel any play in the bearings supporting the shafts coming out of the housing so I?m stumped as to why I cant get these seals to hold. Have any of you had this problem and what can I do to fix it. All the help is appreciated

Is there a worn spot on the shaft? I think Federal seals sold seals that placed the lip of the seal at a different area, so it wouldn't come into contact with the worn spot. You should take the part number for the seals to a parts store and see if they sell such a seal. One other thing you can try is not to press the seal in as deep as the original. It will give the seal lip a better area to ride on.

I just replaced the seals in my 51 VAC. I replaced with a new seal on each side and it leaked again after a couple days. The replacement seal was a little bit thinner than the original so I ended up putting two seals on each side. So far so good with the two seals on each side.

If the other suggestions don't work a thin stainless steel sheet metal sleeve is available to put on shaft. It is called a "speedy" sleeve or seal I think. Probably less than 1/64" thick. It covers the shaft groove. I think a sealing compound comes with it to seal between the shaft and seal.

Repair sleeves are standard for harmonic balancers on many American auto engines. I used to have a Jeep that didn't get it when it was rebuilt, it always dripped wherever you parked it. They are usually available but harder to find by shaft size, maybe talk to your local machine shop. The sealant is usually red loktite.
