old Cat D7 cat problem

Friends have a 1960's Cat D7 off the track. It is inside the front idler. Does the master track pin look different from others? Any special tricks to get it back on? Suppose they'll have to break the track.

A master pin will typically have a dimple in the center.

That said, if the track is off the first thing to do is to loosen the tensioner.

Now, put blocks under the rear corner of the machine on the side the track is off. Stack them as tight as possible under the machine. With that done, put the blade down and use it to pick up the machine....assuming it's not cable operated.... This should pick the the track up off the ground allowing it to be moved without moving the machine.

With the tensioner slacked, hook a chain to the inside edge of the track about midway back. Next pick up slightly and pull towards the outside. Next start pulling the track on that side forward. The track should ride back onto the idler.

You might have to fight it a bit more if another machine isn't available to do the lifting and pulling, but it can still be done. Anyway you do it, will most likely be much easier than having to drive out a master pin to break a track.

Good luck.

Just like Wayne says. I've done it on the same model but 20 years older, cable operated with the manual track tension adjusters. Usually due to sharp turning, too much slack due to wear, in the mud, worst time it can happen etc. LOL. Jacks, pulling and persistence, it slipped back on. This one slid while coming down a short slope to flat ground, track rode off.

thanks. Gave'em your answer but in the meantime they squirmed it around til its off the sprocket on the inside also. At least its hard ground tho its completely blocking their driveway crosswise on a slope!
