Hi all after a wet winter I went to start the d239 in my dozer it seemed to lock for a second then fired OK. I reckon it had some water sneak in as the exh cover had blown off it seemed to go OK but has deteriorated and seemed to lose power when hot now. I suspected he'd gasket and saw no 1 was shiny so thought maybe new gasket with hylomar would fix. After restart sounded good until hot then lost power again. Valves OK injs OK head gasket looked OK when removed mist be head opening up when hot. Any ideas or similar stories would be greatly appreciated

The bottom side of that engine is a lot more problematic than the top usually. Cracked heads are rare, I would guess water in the oil caused lower bearing damage so when the engine heats up things are getting tight. You say # one was shinny , so you are thinking it was not firing, is that you thinking. You could have bent a rod by turning it over with water on top of a piston but that miss would show up cold or hot. Think I would be looking at the bottom side pretty quick.

Thanks Jim
i am guessing no 4 has broken rings as oil when drained had an aluminium look to it.
I swapped injectors from 1 to 4 and 4 was still missing 2 and 3 seemed to make a slight difference when cracked but 1 made the most difference.
Started to take the sump off but am guessing i need to take the equaliser beam and cradle thingy out?Is this a dangerous job as i am under the dozer alone on a sheet of plastic in 4 inches of sticky clay .
one looked shiny as i thought maybe water entering and steam cleaning piston top of carbon it wasnt shiny clean just cleaner than the rest.
Also have oil or unburnt fuel coming out exhaust. When i had the head off all pistons seemed to hit the same height.
I plan to figure out a plan when i get the sump off and inspect crank.

You need to send me an e mail we need to talk. 28 years of experience is going to save you some work. BUT DO NOT start trying to remove the equalizer bar, that is opening a whole can of worms that you do not to need to do.

Thanks JM email sent
Funny thing is ive got an old hough 30 with a d236 in it to lift the engine out but i have to fix it as the engine rattled and missed about six months ago.
Its on the to do list.
Have another hough 30 as well stripped that one and has a cracked liner just waiting to fix that one as well. Also on the to do list.

If you sent an e mail I never got it but remove the engine from the top , no need to pull the center beam. Just jerk the dash of and pull from the top.

Hi
Ive sent two but maybe because i am in the land down under they are not getting through. [email protected] is my email.
I put sump back on and pulled head again .Balance shafts stopping me taking sump off as i wanted to do inframe liners etc.
I happened to put rad tester in inj holes and when pumping 2 3 and 4 at tdc i could hear air leaking.
Bores have slight pitting but hope its not porous but would not be leaking at tdc unless rings completely gone but i compression tested earlier with a hold on type and was blowing my hand off at 150 psi.

Once head was off i noticed slight trace hylomar stuck in no 4 dowel so hoping that is causing problems.also valve seals are no good causing oil to be blown out exhaust im guessing.
Just rang local iveco dealer and they have not got parts which is a pain.I reckon to get a vrs from uk as last vrs gskt came from your way but had no valve stem seals.

Also checked piston height off liner top and no 4 was 5 thou lower but all rest seemed ok so may be slight bend in rod or liner height differences

the stress has gone.
Just bought a 574 inter with d239 for 500 so if td8 engine is stuffed bottom end i will be right.
Looking at specs the 574 seems like a pretty good tractor so hopefully it will be a doer upper.
Only probs is fuel shaft broken a small pin so i am thinking silver solder and refit
