Currently made some progress, got the Cat 318D running again after previous operator ran it out of fuel. But I need to get the operator's side clutch working on the lower (reversing) shaft so I can get it on a trailer and haul it home. This shaft is a mechanical shuttle clutch system, giving forward and reverse for 3 functions. This side operates forward travel, swing to right, and raising boom. It is not transmitting any torque at all, I lowered the boom to where there is slack in the cables, and it will not even take out the slack! There appears to be plenty of thickness left in the friction blocks, looks like they barely touch the driven disk, but not firmly enough to transfer any power.
The Northwest operator's manual claims there is only 1 adjustment, running the large ring nut in and out to change the throw of the driving clutch disk into the driven disk. I've run this adjustment ring in and out, but it doesn't help any. The parts manual only shows a partial cutaway drawing of the reversing shaft assembly with this clutch in the engaged position, but doesn't offer any advice. I am told that Northwest did not make a repair manual.
I talked to a local "old time" crane mechanic, he says there is also another adjustment, but didn't say exactly what it is. I think I just don't have enough "throw" in the clutch lever linkage to get the clutch disks pushed together firmly enough for them to "toggle in" and transmit torque. I'll have my son operate the lever back and forth so I can watch to see if the linkage is "bottoming out" anywhere and limiting the throw. There are some rod eyes in the rods that I should be able to use to lengthen them for more throw. The machine is 80 miles away, so I have to limit my trips to when I think I have new information that might help get her moving again.
