Jd 350 dozer problems

I'm new to the forum.i recently bought a 65 model jd 350 dozer. It had a stuck steering clutch on one side so I didn't drive it much. I've replaced the steering clutches on both sides now and ran it about 4 hours but now it seems it doesn't want to pull up a hill or move under a load. It goes fwd and reverse fine but sometimes turning now it'll stop it doesn't matter which way I try to turn. I tried what I read on a previous post about pulling the rectangle plate off that's under the seat and watching the gear when I push against something. The gear slows way down when pushing or trying to turn. I don't know if this is related in anyway but the fwd and reverse shifter on the dash is now backwards. Fwd is reverse and reverse is fwd. Can anyone help me out please

replacing the clutch packs doesn't sound like the problem. not sure why the reverser is back wards unless you had some lines off and switched them. did you shift your transmission cause if you did you may have it in a higher gear which will give you almost no power . not sure about your model but earlier JD crawlers if the reverser is bad it will only operate on the hi side which gives you less power. those earlier machines needs to be operated in 1st gear for power sake. sounds like you may need a service manual.

oil on the clutches? Those seals leak oil from the final drives & makes clutches slip.

Is this gear you can see is the bevel gear,if it is the trouble is between that gear and the engine, that gear is before the steering clutches and final drives,if it is slowing up it is more than likely the torque or the reverser,it is most unlikely that both clutches in the reverser would fail at the same time unless there is a common issue like low oil pressure or a shot torque, first establish that there is enough oil in the reverser, check the pressure, make sure any suction strainer and filter the reverser has is clean, inspect them for metal, the reverser works by hydraulic pressure, drive from the torque enters the reverser, you select forward or reverse, the respective clutch receives oil pressure from the control valve, the pressure squeezes the clutch discs together and the output shaft drives through the transmission to the bevel gear through the steering clutches into the final drives and out to the track sprocket, remove the plugs from under the s/clutches and see if there is oil in there, about the reverser lever all big dozers reverser lever was pulled back to the driver for forward and pushed away for reverse,if yours came the other way check none of the cranks on the linkage got turned over, its a pity after the trouble you have gone through that its not right,a pressure test will establish if the charge pump is ok,first check on the oil and filter/strainer,good luck.

I talked with a guy yesterday that helped walk me through some things to check. Found that the reverser is very low if not not out of oil. I didn't get a chance to top it off and try it yesterday, had to get my son to ball practice, but plan to give it a shot today. Thank you for the information and the reply. I will let y'all know if that fixes it and if not maybe we can come up with something else to check. Thanks again

Probably has a leak somewhere, the oil is a crucial and must be filled up to the level mark, check on the dipstick to see if it says check with engine running,my Shell book says S4 TXM,the Mobil says Mobilfluid 424,any good quality HyTrans oil will do fine,if it's only the oil it is an easy fix,
Good luck

No clue on the reverser lever, that is just a cable to a valve on the valve body, nothing you did should or could have changed that.
If the drive hub in the discs quits turning when the crawler comes to a stop, the reverser itself is slipping. Isolators don't slip, they work or break, no in between. There is no engine clutch on a reverser crawler, so that is not it. Low reverser fluid could very well be the problem. As long as you are at it, drain it and replace the filter if you do not know any history on the crawler. Refill with HyGard or equivalent, not common hyd fluid.
