I tried out a 450E when driving it I had it in 1st high range ,one in a while when I pushed against a pyle.It would stop,It did not start to stall or tracks spin. just act like some thing slipping. Ist gear high range is next to lowest gear.It did not do it all the time. But never in 1st low.does any one know what makes the difference between high and low.Is it a seperate set of disks or bands? I asked this question in other forums but know one could answer. It seems these 450s have reverser problems not transmission. I would really be gratefull for any answers ,I plan to test drive it again and would like more info on it. :?:

The 450E has 3 clutch packs. A high, low and reverse. All 3 are on the same shaft. Low and reverse are back to back and high is in a separate drum. There are no bands. First off check oil level. Check for debris around clutch pedal. If pedal is not firmly against its stop it can make the reverser act funny. There is also an adjustment inside the engine clutch housing that can sometimes back off and cause problems as well. I would suggest getting the books and going through the complete adjustment procedure. If this does not cure the problem you may be looking at a transmission overhaul. If you have any other questions feel free to contact me directly. [email protected]. Steve

There is a seperate clutch pack for forward low, forward high and one for reverse. The gear selection is to the rear of the HLR clutches but in the same case. To repair, the engine and bell housing has to come out, as well as the top cover of the transmission. The transmission case can remain installed. Might want to try to "jiggle" the linkage a bit when its slipping to see if that has any effect. If you search on here for any 450 transmission related issues you may find some more written info. They are all basically the same up until the 450G. A guage installed in the port on the top of the case would help to identify any problems too.

Check to see if the HLR lever goes all the way into low..With the machine off you will be able to hear the ball detent go fully into gear..There should be a click sound when it drops into gear..If no click , It isn"t in gear..Sometimes the cast shift quadrant will need to be filed so the lever has more travel..

I really appreciate your replies.I am going back next week to drive it .Its a 100 miles from me,A couple a weeks agoI did notify the owner I was stopping by, when I went near there to look at a 450C.When I got to the E it had a dead battery and the owner was out working in the fields? So I did not get it started. I did drive the C so I had more experence with that type of machine.Every on C worked ok except seem loose.I did notice you had to make sure you gotthe reverser lever it in correct pos for it to operate correctly. It was not right where the letters were. The C did not slip any time but would not move untill the lever was engaged properly.I asume over time the pos of the lever may change.I will try to redrive the E next week,It was a pedal steering and alot better shape than the C.The C was $12500 and E $12000 both say same hours 12000. C was 1979, E 1987, The tranny oil on C was clear hdro oil and the D was whitish grey stuff I forgot the name of what they put in now.I guess just make sure its properly in 1st high range drive it around then push some dirt. The owner did mention it may need an adjustmet. What would you experts do when checking out a JD450 C or newer. Thanks again for taking the time to reply I really value your apinion.I have a 1010C but its day and nightcompared to these machines.
