When using my Backhoe yesterday, I noticed after it had sat a while and I got back into it to start it, the power steering was not there. My hydraulic fluid is up to level. Once I fought it for a while and the machine was warm, it started to work and worked for the rest of the time I used it. When I let it set for 30 min or so to go empty the dumptruck, the power steering was gone again for a few minutes and then came back. Any ideas? Thanks.
 
Is the steering wheel spinning around doing nothing or has it gone heavy and trying to move the wheels,has yours a seperate pump attached to the side of the engine or is it off the main hydraulics,I"m in the UK and the machines are badged different here for the home market,what you call a 1400 I think it is a 3CX here,the early ones had a seperate pump for the steering,it shares the same hyd oil,if its how the steering is losing assistance the main valve in the pump could be sticking open,it is under the only dome type nut that is on the pump,undo the nut,there is a spring and valve,see that they clean and not sticking,the pressure is adjusted by shims,if the wheel is spinning around doing nothing the trouble is in the orbital valve.

Thanks for the response AJ. The steering is very difficult to turn the tires, the turn, but it is impossible with one arm, (dislocated elbow). It does indeed have a separate steering pump attached to the side of the block. It looks as though it runs off internal gears with the motor. No belt or anything.
 
The symptom you have is indicating a pump problem,check the relief valve as I said before,check the pipe coming out of the frame going to the pump has not got kinked and cutting off the oil supply,there should be a good flow of oil coming out of the frame/reservoir to feed the steering pump,have a look at the pump valve and see how it is.

I see a test port on one of the pump lines going to the steering column. All the adapter I have do not fit this port. Is this another special British test port? :)

Is there a way to adapt it to ISO or something so I can test it? Thanks.

I was able to get a pressure gauge on the output of the power steering pump and she is rated at 1750 psi and she is reading nothing on a 0-5000 psi gauge. I assume my next step would be removing the pump and disassembly to see what has gone wrong. Any suggestions?
