Question for AJ or anyone??

I have a 480D Case Backhoe with some moderately worn Backhoe pins.
It appears that Case uses hardened bushings in the cylinders with the pins being mild steel----cold or hot rolled--at least they machine like mild steel.
Since I have a lathe and plenty of round stock, I plan to make replacement pins from cold rolled material.
Is this advised?

(quoted from post at 18:55:38 02/11/12) Never seen pins that arent hardened. They wouldn't last long. I wouldn't do it.
I have already machined a larger pin that was replaced with a new one. As stated it was definately mild steel and I made a smaller replacement pin from it.
My main concern will be making the larger pins that attach the backhoe to the mounting assembly.
They may be hardened as you stated, but I checked with a hacksaw and a file and they appear mild.
Just don't want to take a chance by trying to save a few bucks!

Case original pins are induction hardened meaning the pin is passed through a high voltage coil and a certain depth is heated to a very high temperture this hardens the outside of the pin for wear resistance,I often need to drill those pins when the retaining snap ring grooves are damaged to keep the safety man happy, you will not drill the pin till you grind off the first 1/16" then the drill goes through, everyone tries to get by with make do pins but unless they are hardened they will not last, Case pins are pricey but worth it.

Thanks--AJ---I figured you could give me the correct information I needed.
You have helped me many times. It's just strange that the one I cut down to a smaller size was not hardened. Of course it may not have been a factory pin????
