Farmall M magneto

I have a Farmall M (1943) with a Wico X magneto. Is this the original type of magneto that came on this tractor or is the H-4 magneto the correct type? Did Farmall use more than one type of magneto during the war years?

If I remember correctly, the Total advance (running) position can vary between tractors. TDC being set for starting with no kickback, then full advance. Others will chime in as to the advance for an M. and making sure it is correct. Jim

That Wico X Mag on its backside has an adjustable "Lag Angle" (how many degrees the start/impulse timing lags the run timing) and should be set to match whichever Drive Cup is used such as a 25 or 30 or 35 degree advance drive cup (I think 25 is plenty for gas, faster was for all fuel) Adjusting the lag angle on the mags rear affects ONLY start/impulse timing, while rotation of the entire mag in the flange affects BOTH start and run timing. Of course, the start/impulse is set so she fires at TDC as sooner causes kickback while late makes her harder to start. I usually adjust the lag angle to match whichever drive cup is used then install mag and fine tune the start/impulse so she fires at TDC, then I use a timing light to check run time advance and if anywhere near 20 to 30 advance I leave her alone. If youre picky you have to get the run time advance exactly where you want it, say 25 BTDC, then keep removing mag and adjusting the lag angle so she impulses at TDC.

Previous owner said it did have an Farmall H-4 magneto. I will buy a rebuilt one to get back to the original style. Any reccomendations? I went to www.rebuiltmags.com. They have the H-4s available.

Unless you are shooting for originality (which is fine), the WICO mag is a pretty good one. Why not just keep it?
