140 left final drive noise

Hello, Just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue before I dig into this, Farmall 140 everything is nice and quiet until I apply the left brake and it kind of a shaking type shuttering noise it goes away as soon as the brake pedal is released. I am thinking maybe the brake drum on the shaft noise?? It is not the rim or wheel those are tight.

There is probably oil on the brake drum and/or band. When brake is applied the band slips on the oil and then grabs and does this over and over very rapidly. If you want to try a quick fix, drive the tractor around with the brake applied until it gets hot and keep right on riding that brake. Sometimes and if you are lucky, you can burn most of that oil off the brake. MAYBE! IF YOU ARE LUCKY! and the axle seal isn't leaking oil too badly!

Make sure the level of the oil in the rear end/transmission is not too high. That would cause oil to pass through the seal to the break band. I think the seals were more to keep dirt and grime out than to keep oil in. Oil could be doing the same thing on the right but the band there is not right against the rear end. If it has been stored outside you might have water in the transmission/rear end. In the old days the tractors were used so much that the water would be evaporated out during use. The top of the transmission does not exclude all rainwater, it just reduces it. Loosen the bottom drain on the rear end and see if oil comes out or if water comes out.
