5250 Maxxum Possible Turbo Seizing?

The 5250 Maxxum is definitely down on power. We pull a tiny New Holland 155 manure spreader with it in the winter and it should be able to go up the road in high gear without even breaking a sweat. Now it acts like it's got about the same power as the 5230, which doesn't have a turbo.

This kind of came on over the summer at some point, when it pulls a 10' discbine. Couldn't make it up the last hill without dropping a couple of gears on the powershift anymore, when it used to roar right up in high gear.

Starts great, runs fine, doesn't hesitate. Just lacks power. Only thing I don't know about is the smoke. Hard to tell with the cab if it's blowing a lot of black smoke or not. Can't get out of the cab quick enough to hear if the turbo is spinning after you shut it down either.

First if you haven't already done so change your fuel filters and check the air filter. There is plug to remove and install a pressure gauge on the intake manifold. Depending on hours the injection pump might also need attention.

Those were the first things we checked. New fuel filters and the air filter isn't new but it was blown out and does pass air.

We've pretty much narrowed it down to the injection pump or the turbo, but it starts so easy and runs so well it's hard to believe the injection pump is the issue.

It does sound like a air restriction, someplace, can you get the air supply hose off from the air cleaner, and see if it spins ?

First off, I believe ANY turbocharged engine should be equipped with an intake manifold boost gauge, and exhaust temperature gauge. I don't recall what injection pump is on your tractor, Bosch VE rotary, or does it have an inline pump? In either case does the pump have an aneroid boost control unit? If so, make sure the boost sensing line TO the aneroid is not damaged. Aneroid equipped pumps have TWO fuel settings, max fuel setting WITH boost, and a lower fuel setting with no boost. If the aneroid does not see the boost pressure from the turbo intake pump will stay at the lower fuel setting to prevent smoke. May be a damaged/broken line to the aneroid, or could be a damaged turbo, or air restriction to the turbo. All will cause lower power than normal. Worth a look.
