660 starter

I changed the solenoid, switch and starter button, now the starter fails to engage every time, and when it does it sometimes kicks out before the engine starts. What should I be changing now, it starts good and a turn will have it running. I also found a copper line brazed onto the pipe from the air cleaner to the engine, it was open, now closed, what could it have been used for? Thanks Darald

Put a test light with the alligator clip hooked to the S terminal (small terminal on the solenoid) where the signal to start comes from the button) ground the tip of the probe in a place you can see it. Start the tractor and watch the light. As long as the button is pushed the light should be on. If not, it is the switch, or wire to or from the switch. If it stays on it could be the starter drive pinion, or the solenoid (though new). Jim

Well since the engine stops when you shut down pretty much in the same place it could be a worn ring gear on the flywheel. The kicking out when it fires could be a bad bendex or timing being off a tad bit

What was (or was not) happening to make you change the solenoid, switch and starter button? Knowing that could help solve the problem.

The switch seemed full of dirt, although it still worked if you turned the key to the extreme right. The starter button, after taking it apart was deformed on the button side from having to press it very hard to make both contacts hit, all we got from the solenoid was clicking. So now we have this new problem with the starter.

Starter drive is an over-running clutch style type, it's wore out. What's happening is when you hit the starter button the solenoid shift the drive into the flywheel and then the armature starts turning. If the drive is good the clutch locks up driving the engine until it starts. What's happening is sometime the drive does not lock up and the armature just spins. The next time the drive will lock and when a cylinder fires the flywheel spins a little faster for a brief moment and the drive will disconnect. Some times if you try again to start the engine you might be able to make it go. I quite sure from what you have describe you need to replace the starter drive.
