Farmall M Tisco Sleeve

I ordered a tisco engine kit and all was going well with the
install of the sleeves except the last Sleeve it cracked on me
when installing. Now I went to the place where I ordered the
kit and got them to send me another sleeve and it came in a
box that said reliance on it so I knew it wasn?t the same
company as the kit I had got. Well my old sleeve fit nice and
tight but with this new sleeve without freezing or anything it
slid right down flush with the block with hardly any pressure. I
did not hone the cylinder at all I cleaned it up using a scotch
brite pad. I just want another tisco sleeve but it seems as
those getting an individual sleeve from tisco is harder than it
seems. Is there any vender on here that can get a tisco
sleeve for me for a Farmall m 248 block for 4? pistons. The
number on the tisco sleeve is TP-GE12 if that helps.
Thanks

That seems strange, I have always had good luck with reliance parts. I am pretty sure they are a vendor for TISCO as well. I have ordered stuff directly from them before and inside the reliance box was a TISCO box with the item in it.

Is the new liner so loose that you can rotate it in the bore?

Yes it is I?m not sure what the deal is but I know that the
figment of the ?Tisco? Sleeve was a lot tighter. And I didn?t try
to rotate it but I feel pretty certain that with rubber gloves on
you would be able to. I?m not calling any names on companies
I hope maybe the sleeve they sent was on the smaller side of
the scale for their tolerances and now I can get one that?s a
little bigger but we shall see I still am waitin to hear back from
the company I got the kit from.

It doesn't surprise me that the reliance sleeve is junk. That company is a product of several good company's being bought up by a larger company. Of course they eliminated the quality stuff and replaced it with low quality stuff. I have stopped selling that stuff

I guess I am basing most of my opinion from years and years of selling and using parts from Powermax, they seemed to be great quality.
I have rebuilt the last 3 engines using mostly reliance parts and haven't had any trouble, but there is an engine kit from them out in the shop waiting to go in a tractor. I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

and by the way...
If you can rotate the sleeve in the bore with your hand, I definitely wouldn't trust it. I would be afraid it wouldn't transfer heat properly and you'd end up with some problems down the road.

If you cracked a sleeve during install you should check that the bore is good and clean before installing. I found that out the hard way on 2 of mine when I redid it a couple of years ago. Bore was not clean enough and it took 2 sleeves for me to figure that out. Once it was cleaned the sleeves went in with no issues. They should drop in about 1/2 way and gently tapping with a soft block of wood should finish it the rest of the way.

Power Max was the best. Good quality
great counter people. If you notice
none of those people are working for
the new company. In 15 years of dealing
with powermax I put in one warranty
claim. I had put in half a dozen within
a year with reliance. They had cost me
more money than I made. Not great for
business.

I can't think of the guy's name right now at Powermax, but every time I called in to make an order, I got him and he knew exactly what I wanted. I always got everything quick. They were always great to deal with. Seems like they always had what I needed on the shelf and I got it all from one location. Now when I make an order with reliance it typically comes from 4 different locations and scattered throughout a week for delivery. Not that it is a bad thing, just makes it a little tougher to get parts on time.

Do you recall one of the other 3 sleeves taking a little more effort to get it to seat? If so maybe take that one out and see how this one fits in that bore. I would definitely want the correct size ..puck.. with a step machined on it to remove a new sleeve.

If the next one has the same issue, were it me, I'd smear a tiny amt of fine valve grinding compound on one side of the outer portion of the sleeve. Just make sure the groove in the block and top of the sleeve is clean before disappearing into the block. That'll snug it up. It contains metal and causes a relatively decent amt of contact for cooling. BTDT and it's a fix that's worked for me. gm
