Farmall M Rear End Noise

I have a 1951 M. When it is moving, there is no out of the ordinary noise. However, whenever I take off from a stop, or go in reverse, a loud and quick screech comes from the rear end. Any ideas on what the problem could be? The best I can tell it is coming from the area near the rear axle.

My guess would be an axle bearing. They went out all the time back when the M was the big tractor on the farm. Many M's have had holes patched under the bull gears where they cut holes in the casting after the inner bearing went out.

Jack up one rear axle and manually rotate the wheel to see if you can identify the location of the noise. Do same with other wheel.
If you are lucky, maybe it's just the brakes.

Sounds more like either a shot clutch screeching the rivets on the flywheel or pressure plate. Or else the brakes to tight,or rust in them.
I wouldn't suspect rear end or transmission unless it is dry.

I have seen this before, but I don't understand what was done with the hole. Can you elaborate?
