Farmall Cub Backfiring - Update

Finally got to put some serious time into the cub that was backfiring when trying to start. Plugs were D16's and covered in soot and black. Got new plugs in there. Took apart the mag and realized there was not a gasket in the thing anywhere, and some oil had leaked in. No good. Cleaned out the oil and found burnt points of course. Put in new points and condenser and put on a new cap as the old one had some spots that looked burnt. The price of the rotor made me pucker so I didn't replace that. Put new gaskets in the mag. Verified hot blue spark at plugs. Got it all back together and on the tractor following the owners manual and no go. Tried 2 or 3 more times, no go. Realized on step #1 when finding TDC with thumb then you need to line up a mark on the pulley on the crank with a point on the block. I didn't do that. I guess back off with the mag and go back to step #1 when I get some more time to spend on this.

Plug wires are very loose in the cap - Should I look at replacing those? They look to be new but they barely stay in place.

Carefully spreading the terminal ends should make them stay in. What do the boots look like as they are pushed on? Jim

I did do that one the two loosest ones and it made little difference even in the new cap. The boots provide very little help. The do have IH stamped on them, and are not cracked, but also seem very loose on both the new and old cap that was on there.
