Super A rear axle bearings?? or something else?

My super A just started to make a awfull poping/slight grinding sound when rolling. It will do it 2 or 3 times per revalution of the wheel. I have took apart the whole left side rear axle all the way to the brakes. I cannot fell any of the bearings bad but it didnt make the sound unless it had the weight of the tractor on it. It sounded like rocks in the brake drum of something??

Anyways if anyone has any clues or suggestions that would be great, or if anyone can tell me were i can get some bearings that would be nice also. Thanks

New and sudden noises are never good.

FIrst thing I'll caution is that having the tranny on your left, it's often hard to narrow down new noises in an A or B. The noise could be coming from either side and only using the tranny as an amplifier.

You have the two bearings that carry the actual axles at the lower end of either final drive. At teh to end of each, you have a bearing at the outer end, in the drive housing, and another mounted in a cage in the side of the tranny/diff.

That doesn't rule out a failure in the bearings carrying the diff or the tranny shafts, all of which, I believe are simple ball bearings.

The noise could be coming from a lot of places. Jsut for intially tracking it down, I'd suggest that you don't rule out the right side.

Do as tractor man says. I would replace the four bolts that hold the center to the rim with new ones. The threads are probably shot on the ones you now have and mite not be able to tighten them more. They sure can make funny noises.

johnny: Do as others have said, loose wheel can happen suddenly, and make quite unusual noise.

If your still concerned about axle bearing, stick a jack under final drive. As jack takes the weight of tractor chassis, watch for movement of axle in relation to final drive.
