One third choke and popping

I have a BN that runs best at one third choke and when running there is popping noise at the air cleaner. I have tightened the manifold, installed a second carb/manifold gasket and cleaned the carb (did not replace needle or carb body gasket). What am I missing?

I have the same problem with a replacement carburator. In my case, there was no venturi in the carburator. Mine was a Zenith.

A internally cracked manifold can do it. as can a plugged main jet. Popping noises can come from stuck open intake valve/s or mis adjusted valves. Do a compression check first, then set the valves, do the carb clean, then look to the manifold. JimN

Make sure the spark plug wires are going to the right cylinders. Had a similiar problem with my A. two wires were mixed up due to me thinking the rotor went the other way.
