Farmall 450 clutch problems

I have a farmall 450 gas with what I think has a bad clutch. The clutch will not grab until the pedal is almost touching the frame, and when it does grab it is sudden, not smooth. Makes it hard to ease the clutch out when baling hay! Even under heavy plowing it doesn't slip, so is it still bad or worn? If I adjust the linkage on the pedal, the pedal will not come back and rest against the frame. Also, my TA works in both high and low, but when it is in high (forward position) and you are on a hill, when you push the clutch in the tractor will not roll. But when you pull the TA back into the low range the tractor will roll. Is this right? Any thoughts on what I should adjust or try? Thanks!

Get a manual!! I know that is not the answer you wanted, but it is the best answer. I don't have a lot of experience with a TA, but I do know that the tractor clutch and the TA have to be adjusted according to specs or you will have trouble, and the entire procedure is too involved to accurately describe in a discussion forum.

Yup, your clutch and TA adjustments are WAY off.

There is a return spring for the clutch pedal that should pull it back to the platform. There should be over an inch of "free play" in the clutch pedal measured straight off the platform if it is adjusted properly.

The tractor should only "stick" on a hill with the clutch pedal halfway out. If it won't roll with the pedal completely depressed, the TA clutch is not releasing and it needs to be adjusted.

This is a very specific process that is detailed in the owner's manual, in the I&T service manual, and the IH service manual. Do it wrong and the TA won't work. Worst case you end up burning out the TA clutch, as what happened to my Dad's W400 before he bought it. It was adjusted wrong.

OK, I adjusted the linkages for the clutch and TA tonight as the I&T manual and my operators manuals said. I got the TA to disengage in the high position when I push the clutch in so the tractor will roll on a hill. The clutch seems a little better too. However, the clutch is still very grabby when it does engage. There isn't much easing the clutch out. Is this normal for some tractors? Any ideas on what to check, or is my clutch going bad? I seem to have adjustment left on it. Thanks!
