farmall H MW hand clutch??

i found a farmall H with a M&W hand clutch mounted on the LH side of the trans case, i am not an IH guy, so please excuse me if this is an ignorant question. was that used to release the transmision so the tractor would then have "live" pto, similar to the set up on the old Allis Chalmers? was it some sort of over/under drive? how rare was this? the owner is wanting to trade this on another tractor, i know what the tractor is worth in our area, but i have never seen this clutch before, is it worth more on the tractor or sold as a unit by itself? if so, what is the clutch assembly worth? it seems to be complete with all the opperating linkage. any help would be great, thanks in advance.

Yep, worked just like the AC wheel clutches, stopped the wheels from turning while the PTO continued to run. Not real common, but not what I'd call rare, either. Parts are nearly impossible to get, if it needs work. They worked well if you ran a PTO combine or baler, especially one of those small round jobs that AC made back in the day. With those, you had to stop & wrap each bale, so without live power or the wheel clutch, it was a real pain to operate. That's why AC developed its clutch, I'm sure. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Yes it gives it live PTO by pulling the lever back. It stops motion but lets the pto keep working. It is similar to the hand clutch on WD Allis.

M&W clutches for Hs are not as common as those for the M. I have seen several M clutches but only a couple of H clutches. New fiber clutch discs are available for them, but are expensive. Other than bearings and seals, all other parts are hard to find if you need replacements. As far as value, it can range from $100 for an incomplete unit in unknown condition, to $500 for a complete unit in good usable condition.
