differences in Farmall A and Super A housings

I am just wondering, can you take a Farmall A rear and place a super A or 140 bell housing and engine in it. In other words, are the rear ends in these tractors the same or different. Are the gears in the transmissions the same or differnt.

I believe all the gear ratios are the same. The only issue I know is that I am not sure if all A housings had the threaded holes to accommodate the hydraulic assembly. They will all bolt together though!

It will bolt up to the Super A. The 140 is enough of a different beast that I can't say. Hugh or somebody will know.

Between the A and the Super A rears, you'll find some differences that may make a difference in compatibility with some of the mounted implements. Just as a f'rinstance, the front crosspiece for the swinging drawbar on the Super mounts up to brackets instead of directly to the final drives, so you might find some differences for mounted implements or anything to do with a Fast-Hitch.

What about the rear axle housings, and the extension piece on the platform that you sit on that goes to the rear axle housing, would any of that be the same on a Farmall A as a farmall 140. My guess would be that you could take a Farmall front bell housing and up and bolt it to a Farmall A without a problem, but i'm really not complete sure.

I recently looked into replacing the transmission in a 140 with one from a super A. If you go to the CaseIH parts website and look at the diagrams (as I did), you will see there are differences in gears and gear ratios between the A and 140. The SA xmission would not work with the 140 rear axle shafts, bull gears, etc.

However, I think you can swap the entire 140 rear end (from xmission on back) with one from a super A. Wait for input from one who has done it, and also check out the diagarms and parts on the CaseIH website.

If you are interested in getting rid of a 140 xmission, let me know (assuming its rebuildable).

Not clear what you are trying to do here. If you get more specific, we might be able to help. If it is a curiosity question, the parts will bolt together but specific changes make most parts non-interchangeable.

Jay: You can't use the torque tube from an A, rather difficult to get that flat bottom touch control to sit on a round torque tube. I'm not sure if the A and SA transmission will bolt to the 140 torque tube.

There are a couple of reasons why I wouldn't do it, as you are not going to pay a whole lot more for a 100, 130 or 140 rear end. In late 1953, the brakes changed, big improvement, and that change will not allow you to bolt a the older final drive to the newer rear end. Also in late 1953, the case hardening changed, thus the older gears in transmission, rear end and final drives are not as hard in the early tractors.

A lot of folks wonder why IH did not go with C-123 engine in SA until 1954. Since 1951 SA and SC used the same block, yet SA was given thicker sleeves keeping it at C-113. They believed the tractor needed an upgrade from the clutch back before adding power. Short term I don't think anyone is going to bust up an A or early SA rear half with a C-123 engine. Long term I doubt if the rear half will last as long. I've seen this for myself, had a neighbor with an early SA, he opened up the gear boxes more than once. My 130 has seen 3 times the work and a lot harder work. I broke a final drive casting once with corked ice chains, but the gears, shafts and bearings are original.

I have a Farmall AV that i am selling that is a parts tractor and a guy is interested in it. He has a Farmall A with a Super A motor, and wants to put that motor in it and also get a Super A torque tube, i'm just trying to find out if this will work for the guy.

OK, that makes sense. I think the answer in that case is yes, those parts will all bolt together. The tractor he ends up with would not be a Super AV. There are a lot of tractor jockeys out there that would call it a Super AV when they try to sell it.
