IH 504 Value??

I got a call yesterday from a guy selling a 504 gas w/narrow front that has been sitting for a couple years. He is asking $ 2,000. I'm sure he will come down some. The tractor has good rubber and sheet metal. Without looking at it yet, I'm thinking that is a little high. Does anyone an opinion? What problems should I look for? Thanks - Jim

I would say it seems like a fair deal, the more you can talk him down the better the deal. One thing I found out after I bought mine is that some parts are not too easy to find. Either they are not very popular in my area or they are still in use because there are not alot of them at salvage yards. The engine was not used on very many other tractors, so it can be a pain to find one used. Mine was not complete by any means, so I'm in need of alot of parts. The more complete, the better.

I forgot to mention, there are some currently listed on ebay. Maybe you can check the condition of the one question and compare to one for sale there. Good luck.

If it runs make sure the Torque Amp works (try a few starts and stops with the lever in both positions) and see how the power steering responds at lower RPM. If it doesn't run I'd assume it has something expensive wrong.

I own a 1962 504 diesel and would not trade it. Not that it is the best out there, just I have more in the loader and repairs than it is worth. The gas (153 cid I think) is a NON SLEEVE ENGINGE! What this means is if it requires a rebuild, you have to remove the entire engine to overbore. I'd offer no more than $1200. Parts can be a pain, I buy some when I hear of someone parting one out. I have seen 3 on EBAY in pieces and 2 localy. Not the most desirable, but reliable 50 HP.
