just got it and it has no fire to the high volt lead to the cap and I have no fire any idea's guy's!!!!been sitting around for a while. Do these have point's or ????

Yeah, they have points. On a "new to me" Cub, I always do a complete tune-up. If you really want help with your Cub, head over to www.farmallcub.com. Many, many Cub experts who are always more than eager to help with any questions you have. The first thing you will probably want to look at is the "What to do with a Cub you just brought home" topic in the "How To" section.

See ya over there and good luck with that Cub!! :D

Sir, They have points! what you is it?
Early one's have mag later's have distributor.
Could be coil in mag, Check kill switch wire.

Not sure what year this is the ser. # is 2788 if that tells you anything and it does have a mag. Ive never played with a mag, do they still have point??

Mags are the same whether they're on a Cub of a W9. You don't need to go to a specialized website just because you have a particular model of tractor, and I would think it insulting to be told "Go away!" when you reveal that you have that particular tractor...

There's a link to "Serial Numbers" on the left of every page here at ytmag.com. You'll find it interesting that, if 2788 is the actual serial number, that it's a 1947 model, the first year they were made, and a very early 1947 model at that.

It falls in the group of mystical "Circle Cubs" which were Cubs that originally came with a circular Cub logo on the hood doglegs that run down each side of the radiator.

Magneto is very similar to a standard distributor ignition in the basic parts. They definitely have points and a coil, and I think they have condensors as well. Typical old-fasioned breaker point style ignition. The major difference is the magneto provides its own power.

Could be many different things wrong with it... Magnets demagnetized... Rusty points... Bad coil or condensor... Bad impulse mechanism...

Do you get a "SNAP!" from the mag when you crank the engine over to start it? That indicates a good impulse mechanism.

It is possible to bypass most of the magneto and use it as a simple distributor by adding a conventional battery ignition coil and a battery. At least you could hear it run. I'm not 100% sure of the exact details on where to go with the second terminal on the coil, though...

I certainly didn't mean to be insulting at all. I have found this site quite useful for those that need to know the model and year of their tractor:

http://ytforums.ytmag.com/viewtopic.php?t=321222

However, Cub owners are quite lucky to have access to the collective wisdom available at the referenced site. All your questions will be answered, likely within an hour, to troubleshoot your ignition (or absolutely anything else you run into). And if you do narrow it down to the mag's coil, specific instructions to bypass can be found there too. :D

BTW, try pull-starting it to check for bad impulse mech.

A bit more information is needed before the problem gets diagnosed.

FarmallCub.com as Trent suggested. One of the Cub Pros will be able to tell you where the 2nd wire from the coil goes if in fact you still have the magneto - converted to battery ignition.

Many early Cubs, originally with a magneto, were converted over to the distributor (battery powered) ignition. And then a few simply added an external coil to the magneto (battery powered). And many still have a functional magneto.

WOW! Lots of gr8 info so let see yes the mag does "SNAP" when turned over I disconnected the kill wire and got a weak jolt from the coil wire so Im thinking it's probably points need some attention just have to find 'em all compression sounds good all four cyl need to work on the carb a bit stuck float shouldn't be too bad

Nothing is better than a mag! Fix it and run it! Dead batt no problem, turn the crank. Left switch on all night, nothing to go wrong. Hotter spark. I love 'em.
