Farmall 140 front axle tube rotating problem.

Has anyone had problems with the 140 front end adjustable axle tubes rotating inside one another? I've tightned the axle clamps that pinch the tubes together, but it still isn't tight enough. This of course allows the inner tube to rotate and the spindles go backwards slightly. Mine must have been loose with the previous owner, because I see the locating pin is slightly wallowed out. Thanks to the group!

the tube hole ar wallered out the best thing ive found is to drill the holes out to take a bigger bolt i guess you might weld up the holes and drill the right size but that takes some work

Heh, most people have the opposite problem... It WON'T move even with the clamps and pins removed, and they need it to.

Drill out the wallowed holes to the next size larger and install a grade 8 bolt in place of the pin.

Randy: You have some good suggestions how to fix the holes and pins. The clamps should have fine thread grade 8 bolts, and you should have a wrench with 3' handle. I tighten those clamp bolts to point I could run the tractor without the center pin.

Even when new these center pins were not a tight fit. It was designed that way so you could adjust caster of front wheels. I have adjusted those so I could pop center pin out with my finger after clamps are tightened. Last winter when I painted my SA, it hadn't been apart for 12 years. I was able to pull those center pins starting them with a slight hammer tap and pulled both before I loosened the clamps.

Thanks Hugh,
I think I need to really tighten the clamp bolts more. I probably don't have them tight enough if you lock them down that hard. I'm going to get some new fine thread bolts also. Mine have been de-rusted, but the threads just don't look that great.
