Stupid generator question: Which terminal is which?

Super A isn't charging. All these generator posts are making me antsy to get it fixed.

I've looked at it a couple of times, but didn't go very far because NONE of the terminals are labeled on the generator (non-stock replacement) or the VR.

Just to get you going, in case someone who knows directly doesn't answer for a while, do a search for in the archives for "Bob M's Wiring Diagrams". That will probably give you a diagram that will be of use.

If you've got a VOM or DMM figuring the generator terminals is straightforward: Set the meter to the lowest ohmmeter range (Ohms x 1). Now measure resistance from both gen terminals to the generator case.

The one very low resistance (<0.1 ohm) is the armature ("A" or "ARM"). The other will show some resistance (approx 2-1/2 to 6 ohms). This will be the field ("F" or "FLD")

Figuring the regulator terminals is more problematic depending on the make/model. However here are approximate resistance readings (terminal to frame) for a typical 3-terminal Delco regulator.

0 ohms = F (or FLD)
25 - 100+ ohms = G (or GEN)
(open circuit) = B (or BAT)

---

Note: All the above resistance values assume the gen and regulator are in working condition!
