McCormick No. 7 Mower Gears Problem

I posted this in the Restoration and Repairs board, and recieved a great reply but I thought I would post it here also to see if I could get some more info.

I recently pulled my grandpa's old No. 7 mower out of the field where it has been for probably 20 years or more. I cleaned it up but there isn't any oil left in the gears so they are locked up. I was planning on adding oil to see if I could get it working again. Any information would be great. How much oil or an tips you may have. Thanks in advance for the help!

I'am not familiar wirh a no.7 mower but if the gears and bearings are rusted up your going to have to disassemble the gear box and clean the rust off the gears. The bearings will most likely have to be replaced.

I opened the gear box yesterday and the gears look like new. There is a small amount of oil in the bottom but it needs more. Hopefully when I get more oil in there I can get the gears tunring again.

If the gears look like new, then that's not what's preventing them from turning. Any oil will work for testing, but if you plan on using it, you might want to go with heavy gear lube.

Adding oil probably won't help free the gearbox up. What is likely to have happened is, the bearings are siezed on the outside from weather and lack of use.
