on this W-6 does the gear in the front housing by the water pump just kinda float in there when nothing is connected to it?
i took this hyd pump off and it looks like it just kinda floats in there like an idler gear, and then when the pumps in there it lines up and runs the pump off the inner gears in the front of block

That gear you see inside the cover is the cam drive gear. And if the gear "just kinda floats in there" it means cam gear hub has failed (broken).

Cam gear hub breakage on the M/W-6 engines not unusual on account of the loads put on it by the live hyd pump. Unfortunately the only fix is to open the front the engine and install a new cam gear.
