W4 Drawbar (Hardening)

Another question regarding my W4. I searched high and low but could not find a factory drawbar to buy for my W4. I was able to borrow one for a sample, however, and I ended up making my own out of a piece of cold-rolled steel. While this works for show, I would really like to be able to use it without stretching out the holes or straightening the bends. Has anyone ever made a drawbar and hardened it themselves or had it done somewhere? Just curious about my options.

Are you sure they were hardened? I would think they wouldn"t be as they would then have a tendency to break rather than bend. I look forward to finding out. tractorsam

You can't heat treat cold rolled steel. You could have it suface hardened but the cost would be prohibitive and may make it brittle. If you want a really tough drawbar get a piece of 4130 steel also called brake bar.

Cold roll steel doesn't contain enough carbon in it to harden with a rockwell over 20.

Hot roll is the cheaper steel but is harder.

You can surface harden "CRS" buy heating it and controlling the cooling process.

You cold get it red and put it in oil " oil hardened" . Alot of smoke.

I cut a brand new draw bar for my M and it wasn't hardened.

The W-4 dont have enough power to straighten out the bends and unless you pull a plow for three wks you sure aint going to eggshape the hole. Using a pto baler would do the most damage but a little grease on the pin sure would make a difference so stop worring you will be just fine.

Thanks a lot everyone! I think I'll just paint it up and use it then, especially since it's not like I'll be farming hundreds of acres with it. I guess I knew a lot less about steel than I thought. It sure is fun to be able to bounce questions off such a large audience of experts now that my grandpa isn't around to answer my questions. Thanks again! - Eric

if you aren't using it a lot it will be fine,or you could case harden it (with stands wear much better)with a case hardening powder you can get from an industry supplier, just follow the direction on the can. Pre-hardened 4140 mat. is far tougher butmuch more expensive.
