cub overheating

The Cub gets quite hot at the top of the radiator but should be cool at the return tube at the bottom It is the thermosyphon cooling system. If it is actualy boiling the coolant, you could have a head gasket leak or cracked head letting combustion gasses kinto the coolant, or if the radiator or return is plugged and the coolant can't circulate it will get that hot. Copuld need a good cleaning.

I have a 1959 Cub. When I first got it it got hot plowing. I found out the bushings in the fan assembly were worn out and the fan would stop turning and no air was being drawn through the radiator. The new fan assemblies have ball bearings in them. I got one and haven't had a problem since. Might be worth checking out. rw

If you have a newer radiator it is normal. Old cub rads had tubes the size of pencil. New rads they use ribbon flat tubes like cars. Or at least what I been seeing.

Every cub Ive ever owned always spit water out the over flow tube when mowing. You cant fill the water to the top or you will see a lot come out. This is normal.

Do you have a good belt and is it tight enough. Next use a thermometer to check the temp as the water will be hot at the top but does the lower part seem cool when touching the block or the lower housing.

Look into the radiator while the engine is cool and with the engine at an idle & look for bubbles. Hal
