Super H Steering

I have a 1953 Super H. When I would drive it down the road in fourth gear the front wheels just wooble back and forth and the steering wheel would just shake. (narrow front end) After talking to different people they told me I needed to change the front gear up front that is turned by the worm gear. I put the new gear in and thought this would at least help even if the worm gear were worn. When I was done i took the tractor out and ran it down the road and I was disappointed to find I had not improved a thing. So do I also, need the new worm gear they are pricey or is there something else I need to look at. One thing I was wondering how tight should that front gear be tightened down. It had a crown nut and when I tightened it down snug the crown was in the wrong place so I loosened it to get the cotter pin back in. Any comments or avice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you need new bushings in the upper and lower bolster. I have shimmed them too with pretty good luck. To check the bushings and if there worm have the top cover off the steering gear and then move the steering wheel back and forth youll see the vertical shaft move in the front bolster.

The gear is only part of the problem. A little bit of wear in several spots will result in a large wobble. The bushings in the front bolster are probably the main culprit. Top bushing is fairly simple to change.

As opposed to the wide fronts, those narrow front ends knock the bolsters out of 'em over time because of the weight and turning loads imposed.

Think maybe new bushings are in order? :>(
