'49 Super-A carburetor problem

the engine will idle down and cut off after a few minutes of use. I suspect it is a problem with the float in the carburetor. the only way to get the engine to start again is to drain the carburetor and tap it a bit with a wrench, as if to dislodge the float. this is a recurring problem and I would appreciate any insight you could give me to help.

also, i'd like to mention that the tractor uses a farmall 140 motor of unknown year, instead of the original '49 SuperA motor.

if the fuel supply to the carb is good, next time it happens, remove the drain plug on the carb bowl and see how much of a fuel flow you get. if it emptys the bowl and stops, could be the float is hanging up. some things to check, see if the float is rubbing the side of the carb bowl, see if the shaft that holds the float in is staying on the posts, or sliiping out. check the bowl gasket to see if it is sticking too far into the carb and catching the float. if all these check out, remove the fuel line at the carb, see if there is a screen filter in the fitting and check for debris.

If the tractor has been sitting for any length of time, the gas in the carb has turned to varnish and cause the needle valve to become sticky. Tapping on the carb will loosen it up a bit, but only temporarily. It is also quite possible that the hinge pin for the float has become sticky and the float cannot drop as needed. Probably your best option at this time to get a can of aerosol carb cleaner, take the carb apart and clean the needle valve and seat, as well as the float and the hinge pin. Probably will not need a complete rebuild, but you probably will need a new gasket for in between the top and bottom carb halves.

Could also be something as simple as the gas cap. My cap plugged up sometime ago. I kept thinking "gotta be the carb" but it was that danged ole cap. Some ole timer down the road set me straight. Gotta a new cap and was plowing in no time
