In the book it says SAE-80 in the transmission/differential case. I could SWEAR I heard here that Hy-Trans is what to use. So is it SAE-80/90 or the Hy-Trans equivalent at the local farm exuipment store? Since I just loaded my 400 up with about 13 gallons of the Hy-Trans I would sure like an opinion!

If your 400 has a T/A then the only thing to use is Hy Tran . Yes when they were new they came with 80-0 but they found out that using 80-90 they would slip the T/A when cold so they came out with Hy Tran . One oil for the trams. Diff. and hyd. Now to keep the oil as clean as one can in one of th3e older tractors is to try to keep it out of the rain as rain water will run down the gears shift and get into the rearend and trans. What i like to do is crack the drain plugs in the spring before using the tractor after setting all winter and drain off any water that built up from condensation before and this helps .

Whew! Thanks! I was hoping I wouldn't have to shell out the dough to buy more oil... Yes, I have a T/A. Doesn't work... but I DO have one! lol
