hot coil on H

tried to pull start the H I have been rebuilding for 2 years now, had gas, no spark, coil was hot, could the dis cap be bad, only thing I haven't replaced, (plugs, wires, points, pistons, etc.) the genny is good if the coil is warm, good compression, and it should be in time. thanks

the coil was warm to the touch after we pulled the tractor around for about 5 min. I figured it should be warm, I think I will put a voltage tester on coil and hand turn the crank to see if it produce some voltage, hope that helps, thanks

Are you sure everything is correctly wired? Do you have the positive and negitive cables hooked up on the right sides of the battery? If you have a 12 volt system, you need to have a 12 volt coil WITH A RESISTOR unless it has the enternal resistor in the coil. If this won't do it, put in a new coil.

Andy.

I am pretty sure all the wiring is correct. It is a 6 volt positive ground system. When you said put in a new coil, should I replace the dis cap anyway.Shouldn'tbe very much $$$, I did not know if the coil should get warm or not. Thanks!

You need to check for battery voltage at the small terminals on the coil using a volt meter or test light with the points open and the ignition switch on. If there's voltage on both terminals
pull the coil wire from the distributor cap and hold near a good ground, then have someone to snap those points open & closed several times and see if there's fire from the coil wire. Hal
PS: Rub those points with some 320 wet or dry.

Make sure none of the wires where the points and condenser are connected aren't touching any ground. I would install a new condenser and make sure the points are set at .020". Hal

New points, condensor, distributor cap, spark plugs, and wires should be standard operating procedure for a "restoration" or "rebuild." If you're not replacing those basic, critical parts, what exactly are you "rebuilding?"

Please, don't waste your time dragging the tractor all over heck's half acres trying to get it to start. If a gasoline-powered tractor doesn't pop right off and run within 10 feet, there is something wrong that needs to be fixed. Towing it for "5 minutes" won't change that. Freud defined insanity as performing the same action over and over, expecting different results...

Why aren't you using the starter? The same reason the starter doesn't work (bad/weak/dead battery) may be why you don't have any spark. If the battery isn't producing enough voltage, the coil won't build up enough charge to pop off a spark.

I agree that you need to see if you are getting juice to the coil. Use a test light or volt meter. Either will work. If it is warm it should be getting jucie. Then test for spark by pullin gth coil wire from the dist. and holding to ground while you turn over the tractor.
