My Farmall "A" quit running.Through the process of
elimination,I discovered there was no spark to the plugs from the magneto.
Never had any trouble with the mag before and didn't know much about it.I did figure, though,it must have a coil and a set of points.
Took it off and apart.Had the weird shaped, old coil tested. It was no good. The points were clean and working fine.
They wanted $200.00 for new coil.DAAAAA!!!
There MUST be a cheaper way.I'm always willing to try something once.
My other tractor has a $20.00 coil hooked up to
a distributor and points. Why can't I do the same.
I threw away the old coil, attached an ordinary
12 volt coil to the nearby oil filter casing and
wired it to the points in the mag.I also discovered to change the condensor to a $4.00
common 12 volt one.,,,runs better than it ever did!
My question to you guys is this,,,,,,,
Did I invent this proceedure or is it in the books as a common, less expensive way to replace a faulty coil in a magneto???
What do you think?
