Don't laugh

I know I'll get all sorts of why's.......but I want to add power steering to my Super A. It can be a real female dog to maneuver in tight places and being able to easily spin the steering wheel is becoming more appealing to me everyday. After years of wrestling manual steering Olivers and Allis' and JD's.....and finally getting a new tractor with PS, I am convinced it's the best thing since sliced bread. I just don't know where to start to convert this little animal, as I doubt any kits were ever made for it and I don't know if the hydraulic system is PS friendly. However, I am satisfied it has been done by somebody along the way. Anybody have an idea to share?

I'm sure it can be done, but it will take a lot of improvising and head scratchin', and the total cost will probably scare you unless you can scrounge all the parts from a spare parts heap. Also, the end result will be better than nothing, but probably not nearly as good as what is on your new tractor. I've got power steering on a '50 H, and I love it, but it won't hold a candle to the full hydraulic power steering on newer machinery.

no im not laughing there was a guy a good while back that posted pictures of his super a that he had a charlynn setup looked kinda funny but it worked :D

did a quick search and found this picture

tn terry,

That looks very appealing...now if I just knew what brand/model the unit is.....maybe I could start looking. I think CharLynn made most of the aftermarket PS kits.

I saw the word on the engine block in the picture and immediately I thought of the "Church Lady" on the old Saturday Night Live show..."Well now, isn"t that Special!"

Har!

Rusty,

This '05 Deere has hydrostatic steering....now what the difference is from 'hydraulic', I don't know. Maybe it uses a 'motor' instead of a cylinder.....I've never bothered to look!

One of the first PS tractors I ever ran was a mid 70's JD 830. That is a nice little tractor and steers with one finger.....at least the one I used, did.

Hydrostatic is basically the same thing as hydraulic. There is no actual mechanicle connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels, and yes, it does make for "effortless" steering. The aftermarket add-on kits will not quite accomplish the "effortless" part, but are still a very big improvement.

Rusty: Back in seventys we ran M, SuperM and 400 with add on power steering and they were all one finger steer, we also had 2 near new MF 1100s and Case 870 and the newer tractors steered no better than the Farmalls. If the "deverter" valve in steering motor is a little out of adjustment or pump is weak they will not steer so well though.

HI
Awhile back on ebay I swa a power steering set up for a Super A. It went for close to $1,000
So ther may be some out there somewhere.
Maybe Hugh Mckay will know more. He is the Super a guru
good luck

All you need to do is install a CharLynn steering motor, same as what's used on the H's and M's, in the steering shaft on your Super A. That's what that picture shows.

Yeah, "all" you need to do... There's no such thing as a kit for this, so you'll have to figure out how to mount the motor.

Then it's a matter of where to get the hydraulics. You could install a bypass block and a priority valve to use the tractor's hydraulics, or fabricate a mount for a junkyard power steering pump off a car.

Pricewise, the junkyard pump will be the better option. A bypass block is $75, and a diverter runs around $100.

The torque generator is item 9-7122 at surpluscenter.com. $379.99. Yikes.

My old 900 Case (1958) has always had one finger steering. That is case factory power steering on the tractor.

Mark: The respondents have told you how, do you really think it will be worth it? Your arm muscles are out of shape, do 50 push ups first thing every morning. It will soon cure your steering problems. I only give good advice, haha.

Hugh,

Being past 50 doesn"t help and besides my arms....I"m getting a little soft between the ears...hehe!

Some days.....I feel I need a push to get out of bed. To hell with push-ups!

I searched for parts and they are out there.....but they must be gold plated.....I refuse to pay the ransom required to buy them.
