Farmall M Starter

Had the starter rebuilt at a local shop. Cranked tractor twice and starter is dead. That money went down the tube, so looking for suggestions.
Also, how can I identify the correct starter for the tractor in that I can not find a model or serial number. There is a number between the actual starter and the part that inserts into the crankcase that appears to be "730 or 750".
Thanks

Harley - Most likey the problem is a bad connection somewhere between the battery, the starter switch and ground. Could also be a failing starter switch.

Are you sure the starter is dead? When the starter locks up agains"t the ring gear it will seem like a dead starter....nothing happens, not even a click. To check, just loosen the 2 bolts holding the starter on...and listen for a "click" as that will be the starter gear releasing as the starter becomes looser. On my H, if I hold the starter button down firmly it works fine, but if I don"t apply enough pressure and the starter momentarily stops and I hit the button harder to make the starter work, the starter locks up right now. This is a well-known problem with H"s and M"s. LA in WI

The serial # will not nmake a difference. Except diesels, all M farmalls (and a bunch of others with two bolt starters are alike. The issue may be that the starter drive is locked up into the ring gear. Loosen thr starter and wiggle it a bit. This can free the drive. A replacement drive is available from CaseIH (and others)that is called a clutch style drive. This solves the jambing issue. I believe that if the starter is actually bad (less likely) the repair shop should do the work for free to make it right. JimN

I, like my friends, doubt the starter is the cause. If when you try n crank it the lights dont dim at all and the battery voltage isnt dropping down Id suspect in this order:

1) A bad connection such as either battery post,,,,the ground connection,,,,,,the starter or solenoid (if equipped) connection. REMOVE, CLEAN N WIRE BRUSH, N REATTACH EACH N EVERY BATTERY N STARTER N SWITCH N GROUND CONNECTION N TRY IT. NOTE its also possible a cable end may look fine to the eye but is loose/carboned/burned under the crimp i.e. you may have a bad cable????????

2) A bad switch cuz its contacts are burned or pitted or all carboned up TRY A NEW SWITCH OR BY PASS JUMP AROUND IT. This could include those types of starters that have the mechanical saddle switch right on the starter versus the stand alone push starter switches like most old Farmalls

3) A bad battery TRY A CHARGE OR ANOTHER BATTERY

If this dont fix it I volunteer Bob or Jim to come fix it lol

When you tightened the cable onto the starter stud, did the stud turn at all? If it did you may have cracked the solder connection between the stud and the field coils.

Thanks for the info.

I will take it back to the repair shop in that the stud did move when I tried to tighten the cable to the starter.
