My Thanks to all who replied to my previous post. Here is where Iam at. I took the F wire off the Gen(it was grounded) I hooked it to the F terminal on the VR. Now it does not charge 25A all the time like it did. It charges about 5 or 7 A. The battery is fully charged. With the lights on (B) it shows a 4 or 5 A discharge. What does that reg do. Does it partialy ground the field. Thank you.

Henry,

QUESTION: What does that reg do. Does it partialy ground the field.

ANSWER: Yes something like that butttttttt more precise n calibrated. It regulates the current throught the gennys Field windings by the addition or removal of resistance between the FLD post and ground (via the VR) akin to how the old fashioned Low/High charge light switch did by dead grounding the Field for max charge or adding the resistance in series between FLD and ground for Low charge. HOWEVER it also more finely regulates it by the opening n closing (something like duty cycle) the field control relay contacts between the ground and the resistance...

If the charging system n genny n light system are all okay it shouldnt go to dischaerge with lights on unless its running slowwwwww and/or theres a VR or some other problem. Run my Troubleshooting Procedure as needed to see what the problem is.

Thank You John. One thing I did not mention the lights are not connected via the Light terminal on the VR They must have run a hot wire to the lights seprate. Would that make a diference. The lights go through the A meter as it will show discharge when the lights are put on, Orginally they only used the VR for a C/O and had the F grounded. You might not have seen my first post a few days ago.

While it may work better if you feed the lights off the 4th extra LOAD terminal on a 4 terminal VR, she should still charge if they are fed from the ammeters Load terminal. Try it from L n see what happens.
