I have a 1942 farmall h tractor that i have pretty well finished restoring. I am having trouble with the carb pouring gas out of the bottom where the air comes in. Have heard that it is a common problem and that an inline filter may help. wondering if any one has any suggestions. also i have seen a link on this forum to bob mellviles wiring diagrams. if someone could tell me the website or repost the link, i cant seem to find it. thanks Dan

inline filters can cause problems if they are not for a gravity flow system. if you need to put one on, try a napa 3031 or napa 3032 fuel filter. they are full flow for gravity systems. re the fuel problems, be sure the fuel is clean going into the carb, dirt will cause the float valve to stick open, flooding the carb. also the float valve and seat could be bad, the float itself may have a pinhole, and sink in the fuel bowl. also the float could be rubbing on the side of the fuel bowl, or the bowl gasket could be sticking too far in the bowl, and hold the float down.

The gas is coming out the air inlet for two reasons. First you are not shutting it off at the Strainer bowl, under the gas tank. Always turn that little brass valve closed when you are done using the tractor. Another fuel filter isn't going to solve anything, more likely to add to your problems. DOn't install one!
Second, the needle and seat, closed by the float is not closing. Temporary fix might be to just tap on the side of the carb. Permanent fix is to drop the bottom of the carb, inspect to see if float is properly mounted on the shaft, or has a hole in it. Clean out the needle and seat with brake cleaner and air.
Maybe you won't have to install complete carb kit.

Your carb is leaking because the needle valve needs replaced, OR,the float is improperly adjusted, OR, the float has a hole in it. There are other possible issues, but those are extremely rare. It has absolutely nothing to do with a filter of any kind, unless there is NO screen in the sediment bowl, or NO screen in the carb inlet fitting, in which case you will allow dirt and crud into the carb and it WILL mess up the needle valve.

had the same problem with mine, couldnt even get it running. took carb apart again and cleaned, now it runs fine. never could figure out how to adj float!

It is not a common problem for a H carb to leak. It will not leak if you have everything as it should be on the carburetor, you don't need an in-line fuel filter, they will cause even more problems. Make sure your carburetor float level is correctly set and be sure the float is in good condition. Make sure that the needle and seat are clean and moving freely. Make sure you have a good bowl gasket and good packing in the adjustment screw on the bottom of the carb. It could also be that your carb adjustments are not right and it is flooding out. (getting too much gas). Also shut off the fuel supply under the fuel tank when the tractor is not running.

Andy, an H carb is every bit as prone to leaking as any other updraft carburetor, but, as you say, if everything is right INSIDE the carb, it will not leak. Also, if you have to shut off the fuel under the tank when you stop the engine, then everything is NOT right inside the carb. I've got two Hs that are used at least once each week for a few hours and then parked. I never need to shut off the fuel on either one.

Mine was doing that terrible. I put in a new carb kit and it was better sometimes and then terrible again, kinda off and on seemed like especially if it didn't start right away then it really poured out.

Last night I tore the carb apart again soaked it over night. I got myself a chair and studied each and every piece of the carb and all the new parts.

The rod holding the float was way loose in the holder, one end had even come out. so I got the old float rod out and it fit alot tighter so I cleaned it up and reused it, used some emery paper on the 3 corners of the needle and studied the float level and made some adjustment to it.

Started it up a bit ago and fired right up shut it off and no leak, I did this a few times and no leak. Let it set with the sediment bowl turned on and no leak.

It's sounding better then it has since I've had it. Guess I'm saying check out all the parts make sure they fit right and the float is a bit tricky not sure if I could do it twice but keep at it you'll get it. Hope this helps.

I did not mean that shutting off the gas under the tank would stop the carb from leaking, I never shut it off on mine either and my carb does not leak at all.
