bush hog drive shaft

Drive shaft came off the PTO and beat itself up really bad yesterday. I guess that the sliding shaft was tight or needed lubed after sitting awhile, and it came off when I lifted the mower rather than slide like it should have.

Anyway, I am wondering if anyone could suggest the best course, this shaft is bent and the u-joint bearing is ruined. The mower is from Independent MFG, Neodesha KS, SN 107304, The tractor is a 300U.
What is the cheapest way to get this mower running again? Thanks

Local farm stores should have them in stock. Sounds like your PTO connection safety lock wasn't engaged or is worn out.

Some farm stores will sell all parts for PTO"s and also the entire PTO. Take your old one along if you can so you can match them up.

Well if you are set up to weld its not a big job to build a shaft for that. I do them on and off all the time and most parts you need to do it can be found at a farm and home supply type of place

I just rebuilt the metal safety shield on mine and the Snap Ring and Nylon Bearings from a Woods were the same size as my old Case chopper. Check with your local Woods dealer and he might be able to help.

I googled IMCO, Neodesha and got nothing but I did find out that people have been trying to find parts for them for at least 5 years.

Tomorrow do a google for farm equipment, neodesha, then call one of the dealers and ask if IMCO is still around. Then post what you find out.

(Don"t everyone do it or we"ll have some po"d dealers in neodesha :)

Your milage may vary if the damage is severe. A driveshaft is a balanced system of parts. You might be able to weld and repair and keep it all in true geometry. Most people that build driveshafts have a lathe and can spin the driveshaft to check for balance and tune as required. Doing this on the shop floor might create a new problem when you hook it back up and it flies apart at 540 RPM.

Bite the bullet and get a NEW one from a tractor dealer or TSC. They range from $200 up for a 50+ HP rating. I bought a used JD 6' mower and it did not have a driveshaft. It cost me $230 through a machine shop that I know. I have complete peace of mind that it will not fail and cause me or the machine injury.

I am not saying that you are not competent to fabricate a replacement. I myself am a maintenance technician/welder by trade. But I value my health and well-being first.

Good luck,
Charles

Thanks for the replies, I found a match at Tractor Supply for 158, an implement shop would have fabricated one for 150 but this was easier. Fast way to kill 158, will make sure the latch is closed from now on!
